10 Tips For Healthy Holidays

 In Health

The Holidays are a wonderful and joyous time, however, they can really take a toll on the body. Stress, junk food, lack of sleep, too much alcohol, and lack of exercise can lead to illness as well as unwanted weight gain. Here are our top ten tips to stay healthy this Holiday Season:

  1. Prepare & Organize Procrastination is known to be quite stressful! Be sure to think through and plan ahead for travel arrangements, events, gift giving, and meal preparations well in advance to stay organized.

  1. Set a Budget Set a budget for gift giving and holiday spending and stick to it! Financial debt is obviously a stressor and can certainly steal joy from the holidays!

  1. Sleep Strive to get enough sleep through all of the holiday activities! Sleep is when your body recovers and heals itself – skipping sleep can lead to a weaker immune system. Strive for 8 hours a night.

  1. Plan Active Activities with Friends & Family Plan activities with your friends and family that require you to stay active. Examples: Turkey Trot 5k, Ice Skating, Bowling, or a Family Football/Softball Game.

  1. Take “Me Time” Be sure to give yourself some quiet time each day for meditation/prayer/reading to allow yourself to recover from stress. Some other ideas to help you rest, relax, and recover are to get a massage, take a yoga class, or get some spa and sauna time.

  1. Make Socializing Priority (Not Eating) When you go to an event or party, make socializing your priority, not eating. Plan ahead and eat a well-balanced snack with protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates before the event to keep yourself from over-indulging.

  1. Set a Holiday Treat & Alcohol Budget You don’t have to deprive yourself of all the sweet treats! Just be sure to set a budget for each gathering or event and stick to it. An example would be to tell yourself that you only get one cookie before a party. Also – watch the drinks – those calories can add up quickly!

  1. Stay Hydrated Keep a water bottle with you at all times and drink plenty of water throughout your day. Staying hydrated will help you stay full (so you don’t over indulge) and keep your weight down, help your immune system stay strong, as well as help you sleep better!

  1. Take your Vitamins Cold and Flu season goes hand in hand with the holidays. Help your immune system stay strong with vitamins (like Vitamin C), especially if you do not get at least 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

  1. Don’t Skip Exercise Sedentary habits lead to numerous health problems as well as take a toll on mental health leaving us feeling sluggish and in a bad mood. Keep those endorphins pumping and your spirits high by getting enough exercise throughout the holidays. Stick to your normal workout routine as much as possible!
