#ShareTheStrength – Camp Horizon
For the month of April we are highlighting Camp Horizon! Camp Horizon provides year-around programs for Atlanta’s youth in foster care. They do amazing work and there are no words to describe the impact they make on these kids!
From Camp Horizon:
Camp Horizon provides year-round no-cost programs for Atlanta’s youth in foster care. We work to restore dignity and hope to children, teens, and young adults who have been abused and neglected — empowering them to make good decisions and lead healthy, productive lives.
Our largest program with the most intense focus is our week-long summer camp for children aged 8-11. We pair each child with one mentor for the week, and the relationships formed help the children develop a positive self-image as they discover their potential. Daily self-esteem classes help the campers explore their feelings and learn positive life skills to foster new methods of handling conflict and personal safety. We partner with Camp Twin Lakes, Georgia’s only camping facility designed exclusively for special needs children, where our campers can also just be ‘regular kids’ and enjoy traditional activities like swimming, biking, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and more.
Our campers graduate into our Leadership Development Program (LDP) for teens aged 12-18, where our focus shifts from one-to-one mentoring to positive peer interaction and responsible decision-making. We hold life skills workshops for them to learn new skills and participate in community service projects. The Camp Horizon Adult Mentoring Program (CHAMPs) for young adults ages 19-23 aims to guide our older campers into adulthood with continued support from our team of dedicated mentors.
