Healthy Office Makeover in 5 Easy Steps
Half of our waking time is spent working! It is very important to create an office space that will help you stay healthy, not one that is reinforcing unhealthy habits. Here are our 5 easy steps to creating a healthy office environment:
Clean & Organize – The first step to a healthy office makeover is to clean out your office and organize it. This will be a guaranteed stress reducer! Get rid of anything you do not need or that is not functional. Have a place for everything. Investing in a simple desk organizer can go a long way!
Remove Temptations – If you have a candy bowl or a stash of junk food anywhere in your office – remove it! Do not waist energy in battling the temptations. “Out of sight, out of mind” could not be any truer! Instead, stash up on healthy snacks and have a water filter near by or keep a water bottle at your desk!
Ergonomics – Sitting with bad posture for hours a day will really take its toll on your body! Be sure to set up your desk so that it allows good posture (see chart below). If you have the opportunity, invest in a Sit-to-Stand Desk or swap your chair for an exercise ball to help your posture.
Make Yourself Move – Set your office up in a way that will make you move your body more throughout the day. For example, set your printer or fax machine up away from your desk so you are forced to stand periodically throughout your work day.
Incorporate Nature – Putting live plants in your office will not only improve air quality but it will also reduce stress. Some good office plants include Pothos, Philodendrons, Spider Plants, Snake Pants, or Cactus Plants. If you are unable to add plants, put up a picture or make your screen saver a scenic nature view of mountains, canyons, or a beach.
